Dear friends, here are 16 photos…. for we have now come to the end of the #16days of global action by UN WOMEN since 25th November, the International day for Elimination of Violence against Women. We adopted the campaign guidelines and mottos: #orangetheworld and #LeaveNoOneBehind.
Throughout The Official 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, in addition to our regular exclusive coverage during our weekly Radio Euro-Mernet shows on 23 November and 30 November with a final campaign news update on 07 December, we also disseminated the posters and other campaign materials across the city and through online platforms.
Our final public event on this campaign was the brief presentation on the campaign news updates, a forum style discussion and some solution-generating creative writing exercise after our monthly film screening on Tuesday, 5th December.
During our campaign news update presentation after the film screening, we highlighted the findings of our media research which suggested that some aspects of the violence against women and girls are not as widely covered as the other aspects of gender-based violence in mainstream media. The list of our findings in the following areas included the sexual, verbal, emotional, spiritual and mental manipulation and violence: religious institutions, military institutions, police authorities, spiritual communities, employers of female domestic workers who work abroad.
In all of the above environments, even if the physical violence is not in place, one of the hugely under-reported common practice is the widespread and systematic use of sexist hate speech against women, both directly and indirectly.
After the campaign news update, we discussed the gender-based violence. Then we invited our guests to write (in 16 short sentences or less) on orange coloured papers on their tables as to what aspect of the violence against women they would tackle, and what kind of solutions they could suggest. We “caught” the writings with an orange net and discussed their findings and solutions. We “eliminated” the identified aspects of violence by “ditching” them into a small (again, orange coloured) wheelie trash bin.
